African leaders and senior officials discussed ways to accelerate implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) during a high-level meeting in Egypt, with Libya’s Presidential Council President Mohamed Al-Mnifi taking part in the discussions.
The meeting, held in Egypt’s New Alamein on Sunday, focused on expanding trade and investment across Africa and advancing economic integration among the continent’s countries.
Participants discussed strengthening coordination between regional economic communities, improving the performance of African Union institutions and supporting sustainable development, according to a statement by Libya’s Presidential Council.
The meeting was held during the eighth mid-year coordination meeting of the African Union and regional economic communities, attended by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Burundi’s President and current African Union chairperson, the chairperson of the African Union Commission and several African heads of state and government.
Push for a Unified African Market
The meeting aimed to strengthen institutional coordination between the African Union and regional economic blocs while aligning continental policies and programmes to support deeper African integration.
Discussions also addressed efforts to establish the foundations of a unified African market and expand economic opportunities through increased intra-African trade and investment.
The Presidential Council described the meeting as a high-level platform for exchanging views on key issues facing the continent and strengthening partnerships between African countries.
It also highlighted the principle of finding African solutions to African challenges, while supporting efforts to promote stability, development and economic integration.
Al-Mnifi also attended the opening session of the first African Business Forum in New Alamein on Saturday, alongside El-Sisi, other African leaders and representatives of major businesses and institutions.
