A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck Libya on Sunday, with no reported casualties or property damage, according to the Libyan Center for Remote Sensing and Space Science (LCRSSS).
The center said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers. Its epicenter was located 252 kilometers from the capital, Tripoli, and 115 kilometers southeast of Libya’s Misrata.
No Casualties Or Damage Reported
The LCRSSS said no deaths, injuries or property damage had been reported following the tremor.
The center did not provide further details on whether the earthquake was felt in Misrata, Tripoli or other populated areas.
Its location, however, has drawn attention because of the seismic history of the area.
Same Area As Major 1935 Earthquake
According to the LCRSSS, Sunday’s earthquake occurred in approximately the same area as a powerful earthquake recorded in 1935.
That earthquake had a magnitude of 7.1 and is considered the strongest earthquake to have struck North Africa, the center said.
The comparison does not mean that an earthquake of similar strength is imminent. However, the LCRSSS said scientific studies indicate that an earthquake of a comparable magnitude could recur after approximately 100 years.
Center Explains Earthquake Recurrence
The center said the estimated interval between earthquakes of similar magnitude is scientifically known as the “recurrence time.”
Sunday’s 4.2 magnitude earthquake was considerably weaker than the 1935 event, and no significant impact was reported.
The LCRSSS continues to monitor seismic activity in Libya and provide information on earthquakes recorded in and around the country.
